North Korean students seeking to major in physics or material science and engineering are reportedly being targeted for rejection. Trump sells tax reform: ‘Our tax code is a giant self-inflicted economic wound’

Alex Pappas at Fox News writes “President Trump took his push to reform the country’s tax laws on the road to North Dakota on Wednesday, describing America’s tax code as ‘a giant self-inflicted economic wound,’ as he called for drastic tax cuts for individuals and businesses.” The President described the complexities of the tax code and stated his goal to simplify it, noting the tax preparation industry is “one business I want to drive down.” The President, noting tax reform was good for all Americans, told the crowd that anybody who would vote against tax cuts and reforms have to be voted “out of office.”

The Daily Signal reports that President Trump “took his crusade for tax reform” to North Dakota’s Andeavor Refinery on Wednesday, pushing for reforms that would simplify the tax code, increase business investment here at home, and eliminate special interest loopholes.

In rightsizing the government, The Washington Free Beacon reports that “the Environmental Protection Agency will soon employ the lowest number of workers since the Ronald Reagan administration,” since “hundreds of employees have accepted buyouts and taken early retirement since President Donald Trump’s inauguration.”

Regarding immigration, at The Weekly Standard economist Irwin M. Stelzer writes that the boundaries of executive authority were pushed to unconstitutional limits by the DACA program, and that the fate of DACA and its recipients now “rests where it belongs, with Congress.”

In the Washington Examiner, Governor Pete Ricketts (R-NE) writes that in a stark change from the last eight years, “the voices of states are being heard” in Washington “thanks to the new administration,” writing that “for the states, President Trump’s opening act has been a resounding success.”

In North Dakota’s Bismarck Tribune, Amy Dalrymple writes how many area business leaders “are eagerly awaiting” President Trump’s speech on tax reform. Steve Herman, the owner of AAction Movers, told The Bismarck Tribune: “We pay too much tax in this country, and I believe it restricts the free enterprise system.” He added, “Any tax relief would be a benefit to everyone, I believe.” Kathy Neset, a geologist and owner of Neset Consulting, told the paper she’d like a simplified tax code. “I would love to see some lower corporate tax rates and a simplified plan for all Americans.”

The Daily Signal reports on the positive impact that tax reform could have on America’s small businesses, highlighting Missouri small business owner Carla Young who argues that “tax reform is gonna help everyone.”

In The Hill, the Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates’ Mark Allen writes that “high effective tax rates” on American businesses “have slowed job creation and economic growth,” saying comprehensive tax reform offers a chance to fix this problem.

Regarding immigration policy, National Review editor Rich Lowry reminds readers that DACA was intended to be “temporary,” quoting President Obama as stating that DACA “is not amnesty,” “not immunity,” “not a path to citizenship,” and “not a permanent fix,” and that “precisely because [DACA] is temporary, Congress needs to act.”

In Fox News, Dr. Marc Siegel writes about the number of lives saved during Hurricane Harvey. After the President called the hurricane a natural disaster, and HHS Secretary Dr. Tom Price followed declaring a public health emergency, “they initiated a coordinated federal, state, and local health care response that has likely saved thousands of lives,” Dr. Siegel penned.

Presiden Jokowi didampingi Ibu Negera Iriana tiba di Monumen Pancasila Sakti sekitar pukul 07.50 WIB dan langsung menuju ruang tunggu utama. Sebelumnya telah hadir juga Wakil Presiden Jusuf Kalla dan Ibu Mufidah Kalla.

Persembahan lagu-lagu perjuangan oleh Aubade mengiringi kedatangan Presiden dan Wakil Presiden. 

Presiden Jokowi didampingi Wakil Presiden Jusuf Kalla kemudian menuju mimbar upacara dengan berjalan kaki. Di lapangan upacara  terlihat pasukan upacara telah berbaris rapi.

Dalam upacara itu, Naskah Pancasila dibacakan oleh Ketua DPD Oesman Sapta Odang, Naskah Pembukaan Undang-Undang Dasar Negara Republik Indonesia Tahun 1945 dibacakan oleh Ketua MPR Zulkifli Hasan.

Sementara itu, Wakil Ketua DPR Fahri Hamzah membaca dan menandatangani Naskah Ikrar. Menteri Agama Lukman Hakim Saifuddin membacakan doa yang menjadi penutup rangkaian upacara.

Sebelum meninggalkan tempat upacara, Presiden dan Wapres beramah tamah dengan Keluarga Pahlawan Revolusi, yang juga diiringi persembahan lagu-lagu perjuangan.

Presiden Joko Widodo (Jokowi) mengemukakan, makna yang bisa diambil dari Peringatan Hari Kesaktian Pancasila, pada Minggu, 1 Oktober 2017 ini adalah pertama, jangan sampai sejarah kelam kekejaman PKI itu terulang lagi. Kedua, pegang teguh Pancasila, jaga persatuan dan kesatuan.

“Jangan beri ruang kepada ideologi lain yang bertentangan dengan Pancasila. Apalagi memberi ruang pada PKI, tidak,” tegas Presiden Jokowi kepada wartawan usai memimpin Upacara Peringatan Hari Kesaktian Pancasila Tahun 2017 di Monumen Pancasila Sakti, Lubang Buaya, Jakarta Timur, Minggu pagi.

Yang ketiga, lanjut Presiden, Ketiga, posisi pemerintah sangat jelas, pegang teguh TAP MPRS Nomor 25 Tahun 1966. Artinya apa? Komitmen kita, komitmen Presiden, komitmen pemerintah jelas, karena di TAP MPRS 25 Tahun 1966 jelas bahwa PKI itu dilarang.

“Jelas sekali, saya kira tidak perlu saya ulang-ulang,” ujar Presiden Jokowi.

Kepala Negara mengajak seluruh komponen bangsa, dan ia perintahkan juga kepada TNI/Polri serta seluruh lembaga-lembaga pemerintah untuk bersama-sama bersinergi membangun bangsa, membuat rakyat tenang dan tentram, dan bersatu padu menghadapi persaingan dan kompetisi global.

Mengenai soal rekonsiliasi sendiri, Presiden Jokowi yang mengaku sudah tiga kali menonton film “Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI”, termasuk yang terakhir di Markas Korem 061 Suryakencana Bogor, Jawa Barat, Jumat (29/9) malam, meminta agar hal itu ditanyakan kepada Menko Polhukam Wiranto

Upacara Peringatan Hari Kesaktian Pancasila Tahun 2017 ini antara lain juga dihadiri oleh Pimpinan Lembaga Tinggi Negara, Menteri Kabinet Kerja, Panglima TNI Jenderal Gatot Nurmantyo, Kapolri Jenderal Tito Karnavian, perwakilan negara sahabat, keluarga Pahlawan Revolusi, dan para Kepala Staf Angkatan.
